GENERAL - Girona Reads with Les Alzines: A Year Dedicated to Reading!

This school year, at Les Alzines, we’ve embarked on a great literary adventure with the goal of fostering a love of reading across all educational stages. Under the slogan "Girona Reads with Les Alzines," we’ve organized a series of activities from early childhood through high school, allowing each student to discover and enjoy reading. Here’s a look at how this special project has begun!

In Infant Education: Our youngest students have already started experiencing the joy of reading. At the beginning of the school year, we created a mental map on the entrance mirror where each student or family could recommend their favorite book. Moreover, on October 24th, for International Library Day, we inaugurated the early childhood library and micro libraries along the hallway. Now, with the project "Christmas Around the World," families can bring in books and information on how Christmas is celebrated in different parts of the world. Some teachers have also shared reading recommendations on Instagram! Miss Sarah suggested a fun read in English for 2nd-cycle children, Miss Laura explained what cumulative tales are and recommended a few, and our Spanish teachers showed different techniques for telling stories at home.

In Primary Education: We have been consolidating various activities during the daily half-hour dedicated to reading. We launched the library service with 3rd-grade students, beginning with a session by Roser Juanola to explain the book lending system. The students received their first library card! Students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades enjoy reading books through the interactive platform "Fiction Express" in Catalan, Spanish, and English (6th grade only). Our coordinator, Eli Gómez, and student Sofía Bordon have shared tips and recommendations to encourage reading at home through Instagram. In each cycle, we’ve created cozy reading corners outside the classrooms, suited to different ages, where students can enjoy quiet reading moments. We’ve also launched the project "We Share Books" to promote reading and reuse books in good condition.

In Secondary Education: Since the beginning of the year, the corridors have been decorated with posters of literary classics like Don Quixote, and as students climb the stairs to the dining hall, they encounter famous quotes in Catalan, Spanish, and English that invite them to reflect on the importance of reading. In October, we started a mobile library, with carts full of books circulating through classrooms, creating spaces for students to discover new reads. Vane Díaz, coordinator for 1st to 3rd ESO, has also joined the Instagram reels campaign with practical tips to encourage young people to read.

In Baccalaureate: we inaugurated this Year of Reading with a colloquium between Professor Fina Trèmols and the President of the Journalists’ Association, Jordi Grau. It was a fascinating conversation about reading, writing, the importance of staying informed, the manipulation of social networks, and the challenges of artificial intelligence. In high school, we’ve also created a reading corner where there will be a daily copy of the newspaper La Vanguardia, and we’ve subscribed to Time and National Geographic magazines.

As you can see, this is only the beginning of a year filled with activities to foster a love of reading. We have many more surprises prepared to continue enriching this literary journey with your collaboration and support. We hope the passion for reading spreads beyond the classroom walls and into your homes.

Thank you for joining us in this project! Together, as family and school, we make Girona read with Les Alzines.
