GENERAL - Ash Wednesday

Dear families,

Next Wednesday, February 14, the season of Lent begins. This word comes from the Latin "quadragesima", which are the forty days of preparation for the great festival of Easter. It reminds us of the forty days that Jesus spent in the desert devoting himself to fasting and prayer. It is a time of conversion to God, to repent of our sins and to change a little.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Palm Sunday, which is March 24.

On Ash Wednesday, the imposition of ashes takes place. This is obtained from the cremation of the blessed palms on Palm Sunday of the previous year. The ash is a symbol of the expiration of the human condition, a sign of penitence and conversion, which must be the dominant aspect of the whole of Lent. During the imposition of the ashes, the priest pronounces the words: "Remember that you are dust and to dust you will become".

During this time, the Church suggests abstinence and fasting. Abstinence consists in not eating meat on Fridays. Fasting consists of eating only once a day, and a very sober snack in the morning and evening. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are fasting days.

We are attaching the timetable for imposing the Ash at the school, for Wednesday 14 February. This schedule is open to all school staff and family members.
